Varicose veins can be caused by age, genetics, weight, and occupation.  There are some treatments that are effective for this condition.  Some of the treatments listed here not only treat, but can prevent varicose veins and promote a healthier body.

The first cause of action for treatment would be to use a support stocking.  Support stockings fit snug on the legs constantly squeezing them which helps the blood flow more easily.  The stockings help the vessels and muscles move the blood more efficiently.

Support stockings can be purchased at most pharmacies or medical supply stores.  They come in various colors and strengths.  Sometimes it may be required to get these by prescription.  It is important to get the right size because you don’t want them to be too tight.  They should be snug.

Self –help is always a good treatment plan and should be implemented even if you are using another treatment.  Self help treatment includes diet and exercise.  You should avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time.  Resting your muscles and body is also helpful.

In more severe cases where self-help and stockings aren’t helpful it may be necessary to try a more serious treatment.

Vein stripping has been around since the 1950′s.  It is a common procedure done by a vascular surgeon.  Some general surgeons will perform this procedure, on an outpatient status.  The dead vein is removed from the body through small incisions.  The patient is asleep during this procedure.

Sclerotherapy is another procedure that has been practiced for a long time, since the 1920′s.  This procedure is formed usually by a dermatologist, but there are general, vascular and even plastic surgeons who will perform it.  It consists of inserting fluids into the veins, with a needle, sometimes, a local anesthesia is added to the fluid because the needle is the painful part of this procedure,   This procedure sometimes need repeated.

Laser surgeries in general are becoming more popular today and there is a laser surgery for varicose veins.  The treatment consists of shooting bursts of light into the vein.  After time it causes the veins to disappear.  It is also effective on spider veins.  This procedure also performed in a doctor’s office.

If you got varicose veins during pregnancy, these do not normally need treatment and should go away without recurrences in about 12 months.

There are plenty of treatments on the market today claiming to be full proof for treating varicose veins.  The important thing to remember under this circumstance is to be a smart consumer.  It should always be a “buyers beware market”.  Some products will claim to do what they can’t.  Know the facts about your condition.  You should always discuss any therapies or treatments you are interested in trying with your doctor.  Together, you can find the treatment that is best for you.
